John Charles McCabe III (November 14, 1920-September 27, 2005) was a Shakespearian scholar and biographer of Laurel and Hardy. The prof at Lake Superior State University, he was founder and "Exhausted Ruler" of a Laurel & Healthy fan club the Sons of the Desert, named when one of their films. His life Mr. Laurel & Mr. Healthy is credited by owning serving establish a critical reputation of the comedy duo. His more books include Cagney by Cagney (1976), the ghostwritten autobiography of James Cagney, Cagney (1997), an authorized life story, George M. Cohan: The Man Who Owned Broadway (1973), and Charlie Chaplin (1978).
